At Destination Healing, our licensed professionals offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy—an evidence-based approach designed to alleviate the distress of traumatic memories. Rather than just talking through past experiences, EMDR uses guided bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to help your brain naturally reprocess unresolved trauma, anxiety, and PTSD, empowering you to move forward with lasting clarity and peace.
The therapist evaluates the client's background, assesses readiness for trauma work, and identifies specific target memories to process (past distressing events, current triggers, and future template goals). Together, they establish a comprehensive treatment plan while identifying any potential internal or external resources the client needs.
The therapist explains the mechanics of EMDR, addresses questions, and sets expectations. Crucially, the client learns self-soothing, grounding, and emotion-regulation techniques (such as "safe/calm place" exercises) to manage distress both during sessions and in daily life before active memory processing begins.
The specific target memory is fully accessed and broken down into distinct components: a vivid visual image, a negative self-belief (e.g., "I am helpless"), a preferred positive belief (e.g., "I am in control now"), related emotions, and physical body sensations. Baseline scales (SUD 0–10 and VOC 1–7) are established to track progress.
The client focuses on the memory components while engaging in bilateral stimulation (BLS)—typically side-to-side eye movements, alternating auditory tones, or tactile taps. The therapist administers sets of BLS, pausing periodically to check in until subjective distress regarding the memory drops to 0 (or 1 if ecologically appropriate).
The focus shifts to strengthening the positive belief identified in Phase 3. The client holds the target memory and the positive belief together while receiving sets of BLS. The goal is to fully integrate the adaptive belief until it feels completely true to the client (a VOC score of 7 out of 7).
The client holds both the original memory and the installed positive belief in mind while mentally scanning their physical body from head to toe. If any lingering physical tension, pain, or discomfort is detected, additional sets of BLS are administered until all somatic distress dissipates.
Executed at the end of every processing session to ensure the client leaves in a safe, stable state. If a target memory was not fully processed, the therapist uses self-regulation and containment techniques to re-ground the client. The therapist reviews coping strategies and asks the client to keep a journal between sessions.
Occurs at the start of every new session to evaluate treatment progress. The therapist checks whether the gains from previously processed memories have maintained, assesses the client's emotional responses to recent triggers, and determines whether to continue processing unresolved aspects or move to a new target.
